SUMMARY:19th IT Best Practices 2013 – The “I” in CIO is for Innovation
DESCRIPTION:The IT Best Practices (ITBP) Seminar is held to bring together CIOs\, senior management and leading IT practitioners from government and industry to consider and think about areas crucial to the IT industry in Singapore. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout ITMA Best Practices Seminar\n\nThere are many IT talks\, conference and seminars held practically every week during the year. Only once a year\, however\, does the IT Management Association (ITMA) organize a seminar targeted at the highest level of IT leaders and decision makers in Singapore. The IT Best Practices (ITBP) Seminar is held to bring together CIOs\, senior management and leading IT practitioners from government and industry to consider and think about areas crucial to the IT industry in Singapore. It is planned and organized by practicing IT leaders for practicing IT leaders and future IT leaders\, thus ensuring a unique audience of senior IT leaders at the seminar. \nThis year’s seminar theme is ‘The “I” in CIO is for Innovation”. The focus is on how the CIO is often responsible for the strategic understanding of the potential of technology in an organization’s business\, and is also often tasked to deliver those innovations. The greatest driver today for innovation in business and service is driven by changes in the digital continuum. This year\, we look at several aspects of innovation\, from how to create an innovation culture in an organization to how to consistently deliver the results of those innovations into the mainstream business. What are the threats that come from mainstream lines of business (the gorillas in the company) that naturally tend to crush the upstart new digital offerings? \nFor more information about the event\, click here.\nTo register for the event\, click here. \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCopyright © 2013 ITMA\, All rights reserved.\nITMA Singapore / IT Best Practices Seminar\n\n\n\n\nContact Details\nTel: 6570 6280\nEmail: ITBP@eventspeople.com

SUMMARY:7th CIO Executive Program – CIO Study Trip 2013
DESCRIPTION:The 7th CIO Study Trip will take participants all the way to the global hub of technology and innovation\, the Silicon Valley. Participants will have a tour to Dreamworks\, meet the futurist of Google\, CEOs/COOs/CIOs of the technology and cyber security leaders of HP\, VMware\, EMC\, FireEye\, Palo Alto and Unity Technologies and tour their innovative campuses. \n\n\n\nOur entire troupe of over 40 CIOs met on a sunny Saturday afternoon for our flight out to San Francisco and the start of the 7th ITMA CIO Study Trip. \nSuitably exhausted after a 17 hour journey\, we checked into our hotel in Union Square and rested in preparation for our packed itinerary. Thankfully\, our organizers had given us most of the first day to get our bearings and we spent the majority of the day exploring the city and enjoying the sites and food. \nMonday began with a tour of Google’s campus and Google Innovations in which we understood the why Google is where it is today – by putting the customer in the heart of everything they do. This was followed by a lunch at the iconic Google Café. We were impressed! \nIn the afternoon we were hosted by Nir Zuk\, CTO of Palo Alto Networks and treated to a fine presentation on the benefits of securing our networks using Palo Alto’s enterprise suite. One of his most important insights was how he managed the company’s Board by setting them clear boundaries\, especially during the economic downturn in 2008. He also shared his experience of demoing Palo Alto’s software by inserting the software in their customer’s network and sharing the data gathered – everything from network usage to malware sites visited. Few companies had turned them down after Palo Alto’s demonstration. Towards the end of his presentation\, Mr Zuk stressed the importance of showing the value of your product. \nTuesday morning started off with us visiting VMware\, a company at the forefront of virtualization and cloud based software. Our presenters Jonathan\, Paul Strong (CTO)\, John Gilmartin (VP Cloud Infrastructure Products) illuminated us on a variety of exciting topics\, including the importance of software and virtualization\, the proliferation of applications that solve basic consumer problems\, the growing role of cloud computing in business transformation\, and the unpredictably of managing users with multiple (sometimes up to 5) devices. We were also treated to a presentation on a number of unique innovations being developed by VMware. \nOur afternoon began with an insightful presentation from FireEye\, a leader in global network security. We were lucky enough to be hosted by the founder and CTO Ashar Aziz as well as Jeff Williams (VP of Sales)\, and Julie Cullivan (CIO). FireEye is focussed on providing security for a variety organisation\, including governments\, and we were presented with their strategy for combatting the threats of the day. FireEye does not rely heavily on pattern-based or signature-based threat detection. Instead\, their patented dynamic-based analysis tool sits on the network and monitors threats in real-time – something which is unusual in network security. As described by Ashar\, the older security model\, employing pattern-based detection\, is no longer effective and are porous in the face of sophisticated attacks. \nHalf of our trip complete\, and on Wednesday we were on our way to the newly opened Berkeley Innovation Lab\, at the Haas School of Business. The new i-Lab is built using a modular structure to facilitate group work and foster creative discussions. We learnt about some of the exciting innovations taking place at the i-Lab\, including the high performance network facilities\, as well as some of the courses being taught. \nThe afternoon saw us shepherded to lunch at EMC\, an IT company specializing in data storage\, information security\, analytics and a variety of other sectors. The speaker for the day was Brian Wilson Senior Director at Pivotal\, a company at the intersection of cloud and big data – helping enterprises modernise their data infrastructure and applications\, and embrace the cloud. Annika Jimenez\, Senior Director for Analytics Solutions\, presented EMC’s capabilities. Our final speaker was Michael Foley a data scientist speaking about the practical applications of data\, particularly in solving problems. \nThursday began with a trip to HP’s Palo Alto campus. As a leading technology company\, the breadth of innovation taking place in HP is incredible. We spent some time learning about the various interesting developments taking place in HP. Our trip ended with a visit to HP Labs\, the exploratory and advanced research group within HP employing hundreds of researchers. \nAlthough we had learnt a lot about the technical and strategic details of the various companies\, one of our most interesting tours was of the DreamWorks Animation Studios. We were treated to a live demonstration of how the animators create the spectacle that is a DreamWorks film\, starting from initial sketches made on tablets\, all the way through to the final animations and effects – bringing the characters to life. \nThe last full day of our trip began with a visit to the computer storage and data management organisation Netapp. We were hosted by Julie Parrish (CMO)\, Jay Kidd (CTO)\, and Brendon Howe (VP of Product and Solutions Marketing). Julie began her talk by describing Netapp’s place in the corporate enterprise world – as a leading data and storage management solutions provider – before moving onto Netapp’s core strategy: innovation\, partnership\, and culture. For Netapp\, innovation is only innovation if it leads to customer success. Jay’s talk focussed on the influence of cloud infrastructure in data storage solutions and the shift in the role of the CIO as a builder of IT infrastructure into a broker of IT services. Brendon described how Netapp had to pivot to better serve their customers and fulfil their specific use cases. Brendon’s talk concluded with a description of Netapp’s “go to market approach”\, which provided them the flexibility to better serve their customers. \nOur amazing week was topped off by a fascinating look inside the world of the iconic Apple\, Inc. Our little troupe were hosted by CIO Niall O’Connor\, a leader who had been instrumental in making Apple one of the most valuable companies of the 21st century. \nThe trip was an eye-opening and educational experience for all involved. In just a week\, even our seasoned CIOs learnt a thing or two about the latest developments in technology and business. We also had a lot of fun\, interspersed with many laughs and great food! The friendships forged during the trip will certainly be something to cherish for a long time to come. \nLastly\, we want to thank all our wonderful partners who hosted us in San Francisco\, and making the trip a highly memorable one. \nAs they say\, a picture paints a thousand words\, by looking at the photos and quotes from our participants\, you will know how much you have missed out on if you were not there.

SUMMARY:Engaging the Board Series: ITMA CIO Executive Summit 2013 - 24 July 2013
DESCRIPTION:The 7th Annual ITMA CIO Executive Summit on July 24th\, was an invigorating conference packed with illuminating talks\, lively discussions between CIO panellists\, and of course delicious food and drink. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nThe 7th Annual ITMA CIO Executive Summit on July 24th\, was an invigorating conference packed with illuminating talks\, lively discussions between CIO panellists\, and of course delicious food and drink. \nThe keynote speaker for the afternoon was acclaimed businessman and entrepreneur John Sculley. As former President of PepsiCo and CEO of Apple\, Mr Sculley experienced two distinct visions on how to build a business and he began his presentation by comparing the merits of both. In the corporate button-down environment of PepsiCo\, the leadership was motivated strictly by profit and market share. In stark contrast\, Apple never focused on competing with its rivals\, rather the leadership wanted to reshape the world and create completely new industries. \n \nSetting the tone of the talk\, Mr Sculley dived into one important experience he had with the Board of Apple. Sculley’s mandate from the Board was to make the Apple II competitive in the market. In contrast\, the only aim of the Chairman of the Macintosh Group – Steve Jobs – was to make beautiful products that would change the world. The Board had to content with the two competing visions and after the failure of the Macintosh Office\, they ultimately decided to focus on selling the Apple II. Jobs disagreed with the decision and he was asked to step-down. The internal struggle at Apple was a classic example of a real-life crisis a Board would have to address. \nNext\, Mr Sculley dwelled briefly on the contrasting ideologies between Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. While the former focused on creating exceptional user-experiences\, the latter was ready to make any compromise to put computers in the hands of everyone. Despite their differences\, Jobs and Gates were unified in their disregard for making money. It was never their motivation to become wealthy\, it just happened to be a by-product of their ultimate goals. \n \nShifting gears\, Sculley then described the difficulties he faced as a non-technical CEO of a high-tech company. He was often in the unenviable position of having to make tough calls\, with the line between a successful product and a failure being very thin. Indeed his most pertinent advice for current CEOs was to get a good mentor. \nOne of the most interesting lessons Sculley learnt from his years at Apple was the importance of a consistent company message. In fact he challenged the CIOs to go through their company and interview different employees and see whether they were getting the same message. \nIn conclusion\, Sculley remarked that the commoditization of technology meant that the half-life of innovation can now be measured in months. So\, how can companies and CEOs build a successful business? According to Sculley\, CEOs should build around a particularly domain expertise. \n \nFollowing Mr Sculley’s illuminating talk\, CEO of Sakae Holdings Mr Douglas Foo spoke briefly about how he intends to make the brand the McDonalds or Starbucks of Sushi. In his talk\, Mr Foo described how Sakae’s focus on automation has helped it remain profitable while providing a high-quality brand of sushi to the masses. \nAfter Mr Foo’s presentation\, Mr Loh Khai Peng\, MD of HP Singapore hosted an exciting panel of some of the leading CIOs in the region. Amidst the ongoing disruptions in technology\, Tony Cole\, Fireye\, Ramesh Narayanaswamy\, SingPost\, Mock Pak Lum\, Starhub\, and Eric Tachibana\, UBS\, discussed the strategies they employed to communicate with their Board members. \n \nNext Mr Ong Peng Tsin Chairman of Infocomms Investments and one of the most successful and low-profile technopreneurs\, spoke about the evolving role of CIOs from “Information” Officers to “Innovation” Officers. As a result\, the role of CIOs has changed from back-end operations to a driver of the business. Mr Ong also briefly touched on the lack of interest in computer science studies in Singapore. However\, he remained optimistic about the future with the recent influx of VC funded start-ups in the region. \nThe last speaker of the day was the enigmatic Founder and Director of Family Wealth Solutions Mr Eli Lenyoun discussing the growing importance of Corporate Social Responsibility. “CSR” used to be about philanthropy and compliance\, but has become closer to the business as a whole. Since young people today are more interested in “making the world a better place”\, organisations are having to step up and take responsibility. \n \nThe final event of the day was the sponsor’s panel hosted by Dr Leong Mun Kew\, ISS\, NUS and featuring Arthur Tang\, HP Enterprise Group\, Sharat Sinha\, Palo Alto Networks\, Wing Fu\, Unit4\, and Matthey Hardman\, VMWare. This panel had an interesting twist with the speakers relating their personal opinions about their organisations CIO – “a peer review”. \nView more photos and video of the event here.

SUMMARY:Engaging the Board Series in Conversation with Mr Seah Moon Ming - 28 June 2013
DESCRIPTION:On June 28th\, the majestic Alkaff Mansion played host to 60 of the leading Chief Information Officers and IT industry leaders in Singapore. \n\n\nOn June 28th\, the majestic Alkaff Mansion played host to 60 of the leading Chief Information Officers and IT industry leaders in Singapore. The evening’s festivities included a scrumptious meal\, beautiful music\, and of course the highlight\, an energizing talk by much acclaimed Group CEO of Pavilion Energy and Senior Managing Director of Temasek International\, Mr Seah Moon Ming. \nThe 3rd ITMA CIO Executive Program dinner event continued the theme of “Engaging the Board”\, and in his talk Mr Seah focused on the topic of the changing role of CIOs. Mr Seah began his presentation by emphasising the importance of the Board of Directors; indeed he likened them to a “powerful God-like committee”. Nevertheless\, they are still human beings who need accurate information in order to make reasoned decisions. \nMr Seah explained that the Board’s most important roles are to ensure that the business runs smoothly and to look after the interests of shareholders\, employees\, and creditors alike. \nHe juxtaposed this by highlighting that the Board has little or no experience in IT\, and that they are usually guided by the CEO. Hence\, the main job of the CIO then becomes to inform the Board on topics related to IT and to assist the CEO in communicating with the Board. In doing both tasks\, the CIO must demonstrate the value of IT to the Board. \nMr Seah then went into more detail regarding the specifics of a CIO’s role. The importance of technology in products\, services and communications\, has expanded the role of a CIO\, formerly called an “IT Manager”. Indeed\, the CIO’s role goes beyond simply keeping the software up-to-date. He must be able to grow the business to remain competitive and find strategies to spur innovation. \nFirst\, the CIO must be able to guide the company’s IT agenda which is the “IT” part of the CIO’s role. This may seem obvious\, but it is important to stay cognizant of the fact that the CIO is still in charge of the technology within the company. A part of this role is to demonstrate the return on investment for IT-related projects to the Board. \nSecond\, the CIO must tame the vast data resources to enable project leaders to make better decisions. This is the “Information” part of the CIO’s role which is to leverage on information as an asset. In so doing\, CIOs should also protect the organization against cyber thefts and threats\, failing which the organization’s and Board’s reputation will be at stake. \nThird\, the CIO must be able to spur innovation\, drive growth and answer the question “how can we use IT to do things better?” \nMr Seah cited the SARS epidemic as an example of how CIOs helped manage the situation by spreading the IT infrastructure across many locations. In short\, CIOs helped sustain the business by using IT. \nMr Seah\, concluded that the “I” in CIO should now stand for Chief “Innovation” Officer as the role must be seen less about developing & deploying technology and more as a source of innovation and transformation that delivers business value and leverages technology. In sum\, the role of CIO must be strategic\, rather than tactical. \nIn ending his talk\, Mr Seah\, spoke briefly about many of the new terms entering the CIO lexicon\, such as “social media evangelist”\, “cloud integration specialist”\, “user experience guru”\, “information insights enabler” and ”technology broker”. He stressed that a CIO must be able to embody all of these roles in order to serve his company and Board. \nThe evening concluded with a lovely musical piece and a delicious meal and Planning Committee member\, Ms Poh Lai Khim\, presented the highlights of the upcoming 7th ITMA CIO Executive Program & Study Trip to the global hub of technology and innovation: Silicon Valley. The trip will include visits to major tech company in Silicon Valley\, including Google\, Dreamworks\, and Facebook\, as well as discussions with leading technologists\, including Ray Kuzweil\, Mark McLaughlin\, and David Helgason\, amongst others. SUMMARY:Engaging the Board Series in Conversation with Mr David Conner - 27 May 2013
DESCRIPTION:The primary focus of his talk was on ITMA’s theme for this year “Engaging the Board”. He started things off by making it clear that while the buck stopped with the CEO\, it was up to the entire C-suite\, including the CIO\, to be fully in sync and work as a team to support the CEO and engage the board. \n\n\n\n7TH CIO Executive Program\, “Engaging The Board” series\, in conversation with Mr David Conner on 27th May 2013 @ Fullerton Bay Hotel. \nOn May 27th\, the Clifford at Fullerton Bay Hotel was host to almost 80 of the leading Chief Information Officers and IT industry leaders in Singapore. They were gathered for an intimate dinner and an enlivening talk by award-winning former Group CEO of OCBC Bank\, David Conner. \n \nThe primary focus of his talk was on ITMA’s theme for this year “Engaging the Board”. He started things off by making it clear that while the buck stopped with the CEO\, it was up to the entire C-suite\, including the CIO\, to be fully in sync and work as a team to support the CEO and engage the board. \nHe continued to stress the importance of collaborating with business decision makers in order to align technology and business objectives to support business strategy\, customers\, products\, and delivery. Additionally\, such collaboration across the various functional silos in an organisation could be crucial in providing value and seamless service to customers. \nMr Conner then turned his attention to the role of the CIO within the boardroom and the three key opportunities he has to engage the board\, i.e. when requesting funding\, when providing project updates\, and when reporting bad news. In order to be effective and obtain approval\, CIOs must be able to make a compelling case to the Board and in doing so he must communicate in a language the latter would find meaningful. \nWhile making his case\, Mr Conner pointed out that\, a CIO needs to be able to demonstrate the value of proposed investments to shareholders\, customers\, and employees alike. Furthermore\, CIOs must recognise the financial aspects of investments and remain cognisant of the potential for “runaway costs”. The key is to maximise the value of all IT investments and not to splurge on every new product and gadget. Similarly\, it is better to remove defects out of the current system before investing in a new one. \nMr Conner’s final point on his first topic was on transparency. Although it is great if to be able to deliver on projects\, it is equally important that in the event that promises are not kept the truth should not be hidden or sugar coated: “honesty is still the best policy” and transparency is key in building trust. \nThe recently retired Conner also took this opportunity to impart his experience on leadership. One of the key takeaways was the ignorance associated with leadership. As one rises up the corporate ladder\, problems are often hidden from the leader. The onus is on the leader to be humble and listen to his people. \n \nThe dinner gave guests the rare opportunity to glean expert advice on leadership and management. One participant was curious as to how management can remain focused on maintaining and improving current systems\, rather than be mesmerised by every hot new product. Mr Conner\, acknowledging the difficulties of rallying towards a common objective\, pointed out that OCBC was successful at implementing its processes because all the business and functional heads reported to one person – Mr Conner\, himself. \n \nWe were also treated to the highlights of the upcoming ITMA CIO Executive Program & Overseas Trip (by Lai Khim of the Planning Team) to the global hub of technology and innovation: Silicon Valley. The trip will include visits to every major tech company in Silicon Valley\, including Google\, Dreamworks\, Unity Technologies\, LinkedIn and Facebook. Signup early and book your seat on the trip! \nWe look forward to you joining us for the next ITMA CIO Executive Programme “Engaging the Board” event on 28 June 2013 from 7pm to 10pm.
